Samhain marks the turning of the Wheel from the light to the dark, from one year to the next. It marks the time when the Ancestors walk the earth, when the veil between the worlds is thin and when we can more easily commune with the spirits. At this time of year we remember those who have gone before us, and honour their memories and their knowledge.
Join us at our Samhain celebration as we honour An Cailleach, the goddess of winter, and we bring her offerings in exchange for her kindness towards our tribe and folk. Once again, we will build the Ancestor Shrine, so please bring photos or items of your Ancestors to place on the shrine in their honour. We will also have shrines set up for Donn and An Morrigan.
This year is also the 4th Annual Dancing Lights Grove Turnip Carving Invitational (you’re all invited!). Bring your own turnip, rutabaga, pumpkin, or other squash to participate, as well as carving tools. We can make turnip lanterns, or carve the turnips with the symbols of the seasons and the dead.
This year, we are sharing our feast prior to ritual. A small snack and warm drink will be provided after ritual for grounding. Please remember that this site does not allow alcohol, either to consume or as offerings.
You may camp overnight, if you desire. We can tend the fire all night and tell stories of the gods and ancestors. Please bring your own camping supplies and lots of blankets – it can be cold!

This ritual will be at Heber Down Conservation Area, Group Camping Site 1.
When you reach the end of Country Lane, turn right. At the end of the road there is a gate leading to a road that goes down to the Group Camping area.
WHEN IS IT?
Saturday, October 29 at 2:30 p.m.
The Turnip Carving Invitational, traditional Samhain games, and feast will precede the ritual.
Feast will be around 4:30 pm, the ritual will begin around 6:30 pm.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
- Material offerings and/or praise offerings for the Ancestors, An Cailleach, or any other deity you wish to honour;
- A token or photo for the Ancestor shrine;
- A turnip, rutabaga, pumpkin, or other squash for participating in the Turnip Carving Invitational;
- Weather-appropriate clothing – THIS RITUAL WILL BE OUTSIDE;
- A dish for our potluck (please label all potential allergens – nuts, dairy, etc.) and your own plates and cutlery; please note there is no electricity;
- $5 (or pay what you can) to help cover the rental cost of the site;
- A non-perishable food item for Simcoe Hall Settlement House.
